Ebola Epidemic Escalates in DRC and Uganda; Over 131 Dead The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health reported today that the current Ebola outbreak has surged to over 500 suspected cases and 131 deaths. *The Rapid Spread: The outbreak, which spread undetected for several weeks due to early false-negative laboratory tests, has now penetrated nine health zones, including Bunia, Nyakunde, and the highly volatile, rebel-held capital of North Kivu, Goma. A cross-border case and death have also been documented in Uganda. *The Treatment Void: Both the WHO and the U.S. CDC have confirmed the culprit is the rare Bundibugyo virus subtype, for which there are no approved vaccines or therapeutics. Care relies strictly on aggressive fluid management and symptom support. An American physician treating patients in Bunia has tested positive and is currently symptomatic.
